Sexual exploitation involves someone under the age of 18 exchanging a sexual act for something in return. A sexual act can be exchanged for money, food, shelter, protection, love, acceptance, popularity, and anything else. It is never the child or youth's fault.
Some forms of sexual exploitation include:
Every person has 'needs' that they require for a happy and fulfilling life. Since exploiters use the strategy of making false promises to meet these needs, anyone can be a target or a victim. Teens who meet their needs through healthy avenues are more resilient to being sexually exploited and groomed.
By law, if you are under the age of 18, you can not consent to your own exploitation. In fact, even online sharing of intimate images or videos is legally considered child pornography materials.
Many apps, movies, and influencers have falsely glamorized and promoted sexually exploitative behaviours to appeal to younger viewers and followers in order to receive more ratings and online engagement. However, sexual exploitation is illegal, can be risky, and have lifelong consequences.
While we may not see the term 'exploiter' or 'predator' applying to people that we know well, the truth is that most sexually exploited victims had close relationships with their exploiter. 'Exploiter' is just a word that refers to the person initiating someones sexual exploitation (the exchange of a sexual act). Therefore, even your peers or online friends could be exploiters.
